medical educator, author

Dr. Jason Ryan, MD, MPH is a cardiologist, medical educator and the founder of Boards and Beyond, the video-based learning platform used by medical students around the world to prepare for the USMLE.

Medicine wasn’t Jason’s first plan. He studied chemical engineering at Lehigh University and spent time working for an engineering firm before deciding the cubicle life wasn’t for him. He went back, shadowed physicians, and applied to medical school - earning his MD and MPH from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in 2001.

He began practicing cardiology in 2008 and spent more than a decade teaching medical students at UConn, where his lectures consistently won teaching awards. It was a student who first showed him another educator’s video series that sparked the idea: if students forget what they don’t use regularly, why not teach board content in short, focused videos paired with practice questions? That idea became Boards and Beyond, now one of the most widely used board-prep resources in medical education.

“The Gunner” is Jason’s debut novel; a story drawn from everything he has seen, taught and lived through inside medical school.
